CapSpecialty is seeking an Underwriting Intern for our Environmental Department. The internship will include hands on training within the environmental underwriting team, in addition to time spent with various department leaders across the company to learn more about insurance operations, how insurance companies generate profits, claims handling, and the role of reinsurance.  During the program, the intern will learn the basics of how to underwrite environmental insurance, analyze financial statements, interpret policy forms, and interact with CapSpecialty's wholesale broker partners.  Additional training will encompass negotiation skills, presentation skills and decision-making skills. The intern will interact with Actuarial, Broker Engagement, Claims and Portfolio Management during their training.  A formal performance evaluation will occur at the conclusion of the internship.  The Underwriting Internship is designed to provide candidates with the knowledge and skills required to begin a successful underwriting career.
Duties/Responsibilities: Candidates will become immersed in the insurance principles so they may begin to understand the career in the insurance industry.Candidate will develop a basic understanding of how to evaluate a risk according to company guidelines.Candidates will apply underwriting analysis on actual accounts to support production underwriters.Candidates will learn to interact with brokers and develop relationships with those brokers.Candidates will participate in department-level and company-wide meetings.Candidates may be asked to accompany underwriting team members on a market visit.Candidates will perform other duties as needed.Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Superior oral and written communication skills coupled with sales skills and an ability to develop relationships with internal and external customers.Proficiency in Microsoft Word and ExcelAbility to work independently, problem solve and meet deadlines while also maintaining a team-player attitude.Strong organizational skills with an attention to detail.Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, or working towards completion of a Bachelor's degree.Previous office experience is helpful but not required.Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
