Pay Range: Starting pay range is $24.90 - $29.88/hourly, based on experience.

Position Summary Performs routine and minor repairs and preventative maintenance on RFTA buses and automotive equipment not only with conventionally fueled vehicles but also with very specialized alternative fueled vehicles including Biofuels, Compressed Natural Gas, and Battery Electric vehicles. This includes removing, repairing, and replacing parts and components as necessary while using tools and equipment in a safe and professional manner. Provides varied support to the Operation Department.
Essential Job Duties Operates vehicles while strictly complying with RFTA policies, directives, procedures, and all Federal and Colorado traffic laws and regulations. Performs routine maintenance and general repairs on transit equipment and support vehicles, primarily focusing on tire replacement, brakes, minor repairs and adjustments, replacement of body panels, and seasonal equipment switchover. Regularly inspects vehicles as scheduled (e.g. State of Good Repair, Safety, and DOT inspections), identifies defects, and makes repairs as needed. Performs regular preventative maintenance on RFTA vehicles. Including preventative maintenance of non-high voltage systems on Battery Electric and Hybrid vehicles. Troubleshoots vehicle systems on a limited basis, accurately identifying causes of maintenance problems. Recommends and performs subsequent repairs. Assists in the maintenance of vehicles utilizing alternative propulsion technologies and fuels including Battery Electric Buses (BEB), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Hybrid, and Biodiesel technologies. Ensures proper vehicle assignments are made while vehicle needs are being met. Responds to road calls, and service calls and operates service trucks. Provides support to Operations Department for vehicle exchanges, vehicle repairs, or vehicle recovery as needed. Documents all actions taken in a professional manner in written and /or electronic format. Completes all necessary forms (e.g., accident, incident, spill reports, core and warranty information and etc.). Seasonally inspects vehicles as scheduled, identifying defects and making repairs as needed. May assist in providing limited training and direction to other mechanics. Actively and continuously improves professional knowledge, skills, and abilities by participating in routine training sessions and educational seminars relevant to the position and job duties. Meets attendance/participation standards for routine safety meetings and training sessions. Completes assigned safety and compliance training in RFTA-sponsored Learning Management Software (Travitor) on a timely basis. Incomplete training required for the position will adversely affect the annual performance review. This includes all RFTA-required training programs. Responsible to maintain the work area in a neat and orderly manner. Other Job Duties Provides support for the Operations Department (e.g., bus pullout, vehicle exchanges, vehicle recovery, snow plowing, and sanding). Occasionally assists or serves as a fill-in as a Service Worker when needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Adheres to and actively works towards the personal, department, and organizational goals and performance standards-detailed performance indicators are discussed in detail in a separate departmental document. Advanced computer skills and data entry ability Ability to work harmoniously with others and abide by the department code of conduct. Solid knowledge of operating theory, failure diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance practices common to buses and heavy vehicles Solid knowledge of NFPA 70E Electrical Safety, OSHA, and safe working practices and procedures Solid skills with common mechanic hand tools, pneumatic tools, and diagnostic equipment Solid knowledge of OSHA and safe working practices and procedures Solid ability to use prudent judgment and problem-solving skills to make reasonable and appropriate decisions and recommendations. Solid ability to read, understand, and use maintenance, repair, parts, schematics, and ladder logic manuals in both printed and electronic format; computer-based maintenance information systems, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, service updates, and troubleshooting guides. Proficient ability to identify differences in high voltage and low voltage systems on Battery Electric and Hybrid vehicles. Ability to learn and develop necessary skill sets required for maintenance on Battery Electric, CNG, Hybrid, and Biodiesel technologies. Solid ability to communicate effectively with other employees, the general public, emergency response personnel, law enforcement personnel, and State and Federal regulatory personnel. Solid ability to read, understand, and use maintenance, repair, and parts manuals, computer-based maintenance information systems, FMVSS Regulations, service updates, and troubleshooting guides. Solid decision-making skills (e.g., troubleshooting problems with a defective vehicle, recovery of a wrecked or disabled vehicle). Basic knowledge of electrical systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, diesel engines, and transmissions. Basic knowledge of electrical and gas welding. Basic skills with common mechanic hand tools, pneumatic tools, and diagnostic equipment. Basic ability to communicate effectively in English including reading, writing, and verbal skills. Education Required: High school education or equivalent knowledge to perform the job successfully. Ability to read, write and speak English. Training and certifications necessary to be able to perform role responsibilities. Preferred: Vocational/Technical degree in a related field (diesel, automotive, etc.) Required Licenses, Certifications, Qualifications, Training Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License and be able to obtain a Colorado State Commercial Driver's License with a B-P2 rating within two (2) weeks of beginning employment.
NOTE: ASE Certification is required for consideration of promotion beyond Transit Service Technician I. Experience Two (2) years of actual experience or a combination of formal training and experience is preferred.
