The classroom is the most important place in the district. Individuals in the Teacher Residency Program (a partnership between University of Wisconsin, Madison and MPS) will provide an instructional program for students' which is appropriate to their educational needs and developmental level. The program recruits and trains individuals to become exceptional, special education teachers by providing an intensive and supportive school-based teacher training program. Over the residency year, teacher residents train in a classroom with a mentor teacher and take on increasing responsibility for teaching while gaining support through graduate course-work, on-site professional development, workshops and coaching. Candidates must submit three (3) letters of recommendation dated within the last year and signed by the author as well as official transcripts conferring undergraduate degree. Other Information Position will require travel to Madison one day per week during the University of Wisconsin - Madison Fall and Spring semesters to participate in graduate course-work.

Qualifications Must have a Bachelor's degree. A minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two-years of work) or a master's degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required. Exceptions to the GPS requirement can be made for individuals who demonstrate their likely success in the program. Residents must apply to, be accepted and then be enrolled in the Special Education teacher certification master's degree program in the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for summer 2024. Responsibilities Supports students receiving special education services in various educational environments alongside lead teachers. Maintains a broad knowledge of all facets related to the teaching assignment as related to the subject and grade level of the students. Uses research-proven practices to improve student achievement. Supports the curriculum development and delivery of instruction. Participates in assessing student learning, managing classroom routines and behavior, building relationships and communicating regularly with families and collaborating with other faculty. Incorporates the learning targets and the goals of the district as approved by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. Plans and organizes material for instruction and presents and reinforces lessons as appropriate. Develops and maintains an environment conductive to learning that prepares students to meet and exceed Wisconsin academic standards, particularly in the areas of Math and English Language Arts. Evaluates student progress on a continuous basis and provides feedback to students, parents and appropriate staff members. Maintains accurate and complete student records as required by state law and Board policies. Addresses different learning modalities, including auditory, visual and kinesthetic. Participates as a member of the school's learning community to provide answers and guidance to students, parent and the general community. Participates in parent/teacher conferences to support the educational needs of the students. Participates in staff development programs, staff meetings and extra-curricular activities.
