Job Description
General Summary
Under moderate supervision, is a multi-skilled individual who demonstrates advanced knowledge and proficient practice in most surgical subspecialties. Participates in a wide variety of clinical tasks/procedures for the patient as a member of the patient care team. Provides any basic patient care duties and participates in tasks to assist with the progression of the patient's plan of care. Serves as a technical resource for other Surgical Technologists. Patients served include infant through adult-older adult.

Reporting Relationships
Reports to RN for specific patient related duties. Overall supervision from manager of patient care unit.
Working Conditions
Works inside. Exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. Works a regular assigned shift but may be expected to work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as necessary. May be expected to rotate within the Perioperative Division if the need arises. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.
Physical Requirements
Work is heavy. Requires walking 5-8 hours/shift. Lifting up to and in excess of one hundred 100 pounds 0-3 hours/shift; carrying, push, and pulling 0-3 hours/shift in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy. Reaching for and handling equipment and supplies 5-8 hours/shift. Talking and hearing to converse with patients, staff, visitors, physicians 0-3 hours/shift. Hearing/listening to differentiate sounds 5-8 hours/shift. Near visual acuity to observe patients 5-8 hours/shift.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
* Assists in the preparation of the operating room and in the selection of surgical instruments and equipment by reviewing the surgeon preference list and conferring with the circulating nurse to gather appropriate equipment.
* Assists with counting needles, sponges and instruments to assure compliance with regulatory standards.
* Ensures that all medications on the sterile field are properly labeled.
* Ensures that all fluids are maintained at a safe temperature for patient care.
* Under the supervision of the surgeon or RN, assists with preoperative preparation of patients, such as skin preparation, draping and positioning patients for procedures in accordance with department procedures and protocols, as needed.
* Matches preference cards to correct scheduled cases as directed by RN. Recommends updates to preference cards and pick lists and submits to Service Line Coordinator.
* Under the supervision of the surgeon or RN assists in a variety of complicated and routine surgical procedures by handing instruments to the surgeon as requested and/or required, preparing suture material for use, and assisting with gowning and gloving of surgical team in accordance with departmental protocols.
* Performs related duties associated with basic patient care, such as, picking-up blood, delivering specimens to clinical laboratories, performing room turnover between cases, escorting patients when assigned and checking emergency carts for needed supplies by nursing staff. Transports patients and runs errands as directed by the RN.
* Assists in the preparation of supplies for sterilization by washing and wrapping instruments, when appropriate.
* Ensures appropriate sterilization methods are used with various implants, instruments and supplies using standardized sterilized indicators.
* Assesses the environmental needs of the area and recommends and/or initiates appropriate action in coordination with professional staff.
* Works with RN in limiting supply and instrument costs through good inventory control. Evaluates new products and provides feedback. Develops process to improve cost containment and decrease waste in the room.
* Assists with the orientation and teaching of new Surgical Technologists and students by explaining department policies and procedures.
* Assists in the development of policies, procedures and protocols at the department levels.
* Serves as a resource for several pieces of equipment in collaboration with team leader.
* Provides leadership at unit level to correct safety and clinical quality deficiencies, following approval assists with implementation of change at the unit level.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required. Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist Training Program required. One (1) year of previous directly applicable surgical technologist experience required. BLS required.
CNA required for all OB surgical technologists. Proficiency in at least 3 surgical specialty groups required for OR only.
