Job DescriptionThe Roofing Apprentice will assist with and learn to become proficient in the performance of tasks in the installation and maintenance of commercial roofing systems such as Standing Seam and other types of metal roofing, EPDM, TPO and PVC on the Blacksburg campus. Additionally, this position assists in the Building Trades Shop with carpentry, masonry and paint projects as assigned.Required Qualifications• Ability to take classes online and complete specified course work, independently and on schedule.• Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or more with assistance; maneuver materials up and down stairs; climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; and work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.• Ability to communicate effectively, have good team work skills, and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.• Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.• May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.• This is a designated emergency personnel position.• Must successfully achieve a minimum of a Bronze rating on WorkKeys assessment.• Valid Driver's License or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment• Will be required to operate a motor vehicle dailyPreferred Qualifications• Experience in a large commercial or educational setting• Good working knowledge of industrial roofing• Experience with TPO roofing systemsPay Band2Appointment TypeRegularSalary Information$32,760; commensurate with experienceReview DateApril 29, 2024Additional Information• Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or more with assistance; ability to maneuver materials up and down stairs; ability to climb and work from elevated workstations such as ladders and scaffolds; ability to work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.• Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.• Must have a criminal background check• Must have a driver's license check• This position is designated as Emergency Personnel• Must be available twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week to provide support during planned events or emergency situations (such as inclement weather) to include being physically on site if deemed necessary.• This position meets the criteria for issuance of a mobile communication device (such as radio, cellphone, iPad, iPod, pager, etc.). Devices issued are the responsibility of the employee and are to be returned in satisfactory condition upon separation of employment.
