The Island of Oahu in Hawaii is often nicknamed (or translated as) "The Gathering Place" . It is currently the most populated Hawaiian Island. The city of Honolulu is the largest city, state capital, and main deep water marine port for the State of Hawaii. As a jurisdictional unit, the entire island of Oahu is in Honolulu County, although as a place name, Honolulu occupies only a portion of the southeast end of the island. Well-known features found on Oahu include Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma, Kane'ohe Bay, Kailua Bay, North Shore, and the resort destination, Ko'Olina.
Oahu is also known for having the longest rain shower in history, which lasted for 200 consecutive days. Kane?ohe Ranch reported 247 straight days with rain from August 27, 1993 to April 30, 1994. The average temperature in Oahu is around 70–85 °F (21–29 °C) and the island is the warmest in June through October. The weather during the winter is cooler, but still warm with an average temperature of 68–78 °F (20–26 °C).

Responsibilities MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CLINICAL • Performs all duties within the scope of clinical privileges granted by the Naval Health Clinic Hawaii, Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, Hawaii.• Population served includes active duty and federal civilian employees (appropriated and non-appropriated funded personnel) of Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, PHNSY &IMF, MCBH, NAVFAC, COMNAVREG Hawaii, Barking Sands and other associated commands. Primary age group is adult but occasional minors are seen for specific occupational programs (volunteer and student programs).• Is a provider of comprehensive occupational medicine services for NHCH; independently performs physical examinations for job certifications, targeted medical surveillance examinations due to hazard exposures in the workplace, and treatment, referral and follow-up of occupational inju1y and illnesses.• Elicits a detailed and accurate patient medical and occupational history, identifies pertinent data from the history, critically evaluates all such information and develops an appropriate personalized treatment plan.• Independently orders and interprets results of routine and specialized diagnostic studies and screening tests, including but not limited to laboratory tests, radiological studies, electrocardiograph tracings, spirometry, and audiograms.• Independently performs therapeutic interventions including but not limited to injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, incision and drainage of superficial infections, and follow-up of simple sprains, strains or fractures.• Prescribes pharmaceuticals in accordance with privileges and scope of practice.• Evaluates monitors, alters or discontinues pain management interventions on patients being treated within Occupational Health clinic.• Recognizes abnormal examination or test findings and makes appropriate referral and establishes process for follow-up. Determines how deviations from normal affect the employee's health and employability status.• Performs Reproductive Health evaluations for male and female workers who are within childbearing age; recognizing fertility impairing, teratogenic, and/or mutagenic effects of occupational hazards.• Independently makes recommendations to management regarding the fitness for duty of workers. Evaluates the worker's ability to meet full functional requirements of the position and identifies any work restrictions necessary to ensure the safety of the worker, co-workers or public safety.• Determines the worker's suitability for overseas or isolated duty assignment based on the employee's current health status, operational requirements, and location of assignment.• Determines the worker's need for specialized immunizations/prophylaxis based on location of assignment.• Provides psychological support in order to maintain life, provide comfort and assurance, reduce stress and enhance coping abilities. Makes appropriate referral for acute intervention when necessary.• Assesses educational needs and level of understanding of workers and determines best approach to fully meet learning requirements through use of appropriate adult training techniques.• Counsels workers about hazardous work exposures and potential health effects.• Counsels workers regarding any abnormal examination or test finding requiring follow-on medical attention, including non-occupational related findings• Educates workers on the personal protective equipment required for their job, focusing on the importance of proper fit and utilization to prevent hazardous exposures.• Provides counseling to promote health and well-being and to improve existing chronic conditions; topics include but are not limited to smoking cessation, hypertension, diabetes, nutrition, exercise, weight control, and preventive health screenings. ADMINISTRATIVE • Perfo1ms worksite visits on a routine basis to become familiar with work processes, hazardous exposures, physical and mental stressors of various jobs, and required personal protective equipment. Utilizes this knowledge in the appropriate determination/recommendations of workers for positions and any required counseling and education.• Works in a model of interdisciplinary cooperation and collaboration. Coordinates a team approach in the management of complex patients. Consults with other health care professionals and community resources in the coordination and delivery of patient care services across the continuum of care.• Collaborates with supported command leaders, safety officers, and industrial hygienists, to validate worker enrollment in medical surveillance programs, trending of medical surveillance findings, and occupational injury and illness data. Assists in the development of recommendations for improvement.• Actively participates in departmental/directorate staff meetings and training sessions.• Educates and provides opportunities for clinic staff to enhance their understanding of occupational health hazards and their affect on the worker's health, patient assessment, clinical management, disease processes, and health and wellness concepts.• Develops and monitors departmental continuous improvement programs and processes.• Develops and monitors occupational hazard programs, including responsibility for epidemiology and statistical analysis of hazards/injuries in order to recommend and implement safety improvements.• Participates in problem solving as a recognized public health provider. Develops consultative services and creates innovative healthcare services to meet specialized needs of targeted worker populations. Acts as consultant and resource for workers, supervisors, supported command leadership and other professionals in occupational health and safety.• Maintains certification by the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).• Participates as guest speaker/presenter at professional seminars and continuing education offerings as warranted.• Supports and promotes ongoing research and publication of findings for expansion and enhancement of the profession.Performs other duties as assigned.
