Position Summary
Under the direct guidance and training of the Utilities Department Supervisors, the Operator Trainee will
learn to maintain the operations and maintenance of the Pueblo's water, wastewater, broadband/internet,
equipment, and systems within the area delegated and guidelines provided by the Santa Clara Tribal
Utility Authority.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Under Supervision of utility supervisor or designee analyze conditions of the utility systems to ensure compliance with all applicable legislation and regulation
• Maintains and repairs the utility systems including installation, expansion and relocation of water distribution, wastewater, solid waste disposal, and internet services.
• Coordinate the allocation, regulation, and delivery of Tribal Utilities to users.
• Coordinate wastewater and solid waste elimination systems including installing, maintaining, repairing, servicing, and relocating such systems.
• Update water/wastewater reports, records, logs, and graphs to confirm adequacy of present and projected water needs.
• Confer with administrative and technical utility employees and contractors/consultants to ensure effective delivery of water to users and proper disposal of wastewater and solid waste.
• Proper maintenance and ground keeping of water and wastewater facilities.
• Contributes to a team effort.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Attain skills in using heavy equipment and hand and power tools.
• Attain skills in Heavy equipment operations experience, e.g. backhoe, bobcat, etc.
• Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.
• Ability to work extended hours and flexible schedules.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment.
• Ability to interact with construction contractors.
• Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
• Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Knowledge of basic computer skills.
• Knowledge of tribal policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED
• Must have basic computer skills.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work is generally performed in an office or outdoor setting with exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, and loud noises. Standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Working in sensitive and/or hazardous areas is common. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, or protective face shields are needed may occur. Evening, weekend, and/or holiday work will be required. Incumbent is required to be on call 24 hours during periods of water utility emergency operations.

Employment Requirements
Successful completion of thorough background investigation and MVD check. Employees must comply with Tribal Safety Guidelines, Policies and Procedures and follow the HIPPA US Department of Health and Human Services Guidelines. Successful completion of the mandatory National Incident Management
Training (NIMS) within the first 90 days of employment. Must pass a drug/alcohol test. Must have a valid New Mexico Driver's License and insurable through the Tribe's carrier and not have any DUI/DWI convictions within the last five (5) years from any Tribal, State or Federal Court. Must take and pass a current driving course from Special Projects Department.
