The Lead Perioperative Assistant is responsible for providing clinical support to OR staff to prepare rooms for surgery. Including set-up of rooms, maintaining sterile field, connection of OR equipment, entering tissue/graft data into Epic, preparation for eye cases, coordination with SPD of instrument turnover. Acts as a resource person for OR staff regarding equipment, supplies and upcoming cases. Orients and trains all new Perioperative Assistant staff. Duties also include transporting patients, equipment, instruments and specimens. Documents specimens and charges, pulls chart forms, and completes pick list / preference cards specific system. Also records implantable items into the tracking system. Orders outside equipment as directed by charge nurse. Stocks OR rooms and sub-sterile areas. Gathers supplies, equipment and instruments for each procedure. Cleans the OR room between procedures. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Spread and set up OR rooms (i.e., picked tables, supplies, positioning devices, equipment). Open sterile supplies ensuring to maintain sterile field. Assists with connection of OR equipment. Prepare for eye cases by picking lenses in accordance with orders. Enter tissue/allografts/bone grafts into Epic. Communicate with SPD regarding instrument turnover. Push OR charges from surgery center. Relief for OR charge analyst when needed. Resource person regarding supply locations, procedural questions and general information regarding upcoming cases. Orients and trains new staff. Identifies patients by reading name band and comparing to transport request. Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher, or by assisted walking. Applies warm blankets to patient and directs family member or caregivers to waiting room. Assists with patient positioning and moving in the OR room. Cleans and stocks OR rooms at beginning of day and between procedures. Cleans and disinfects GI scopes according to established procedures. Gathers supplies, equipment and instruments for surgery procedures. Enters specimens into computer system, then transports to lab. Enters charges for implants and supplies into charging system. Documents trackable implants and supplies into the database. Prints document forms out of scanning system. Documents pick lists / preference cards into electronic system or designated OR system. Orders outside instruments, supplies, or equipment as directed by the charge nurse. Ability to multitask and work in a busy environment while maintaining composure and adjusting to changes in assignment and workflow from in patient to outpatient surgery. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Must have the ability to sit for 2 hours per day, and up to 1 total consecutive hour. Must be able to stand for 10 total hours per day and up to 8 total consecutive hours. Must be able to walk 6 total hours per day and up to 10 total consecutive minutes. Must have the ability to frequently use fingers, hands for fingering and handling. Must have the ability to use upper extremities for frequent pushing of objects up to 10 pounds and occasional pushing of objects up to 75 pounds. Must have the ability for frequent stooping and bending. Must have the ability for frequent reaching above the shoulder level. Must have the ability for touching as it relates to feeling objects by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED, preferred.
Basic skills of reading and comprehension.
Basic Computer skills.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 3 years' experience as a Perioperative Assistant or equivalent experience in similar setting. Ability to complete Basic Life Support upon hire. Successful completion of Interventional Crises management training on safe handling of patients upon hire. Ability to learn computer systems required for documentation.
