The primary function of The Community Kitchen (TCK) Kitchen Lead is to help and coordinate the distribution of meals daily in a pleasant, healthy, safe and secure manner during the COVID-19 pandemic and to lead on-site meals at The Community Kitchen. The Kitchen Lead reports to the Program Supervisor and partners with other Kitchen staff in in leading a variety of groups including volunteers, to prepare, cook and serve on-site meals in an effort to produce food to those in need, many who are without homes, store food properly after meal service, cleaning and sanitizing the site, and closing down the kitchen nightly.. The Kitchen Lead must hold a current Washington State food handler's card and/or ServeSafe Certification, and a current Washington State driver's license and drivers insurance.
Help in the preparation and serving of meals and cleaning of the kitchen: Under the direction of the Program Supervisor, prepare, cook and serve meals at the onsite location located in the Salvation Army building in Olympia. The Community Kitchen has a variety of volunteers, staff and external staff from other agencies that this position will need to collaborate and work alongside. The Kitchen Lead will coordinate all of these entities during meal in which they are leading to ensure that the meals are prepared, cooked and served in a safe way for all involved. The Program Supervisor controls the menu and schedule for meals and will direct the Kitchen Lead on what meals to prepare, etc. The Kitchen Lead will be in charge or making sure all areas of the kitchen are cleaned, sanitized, that all food storage is properly put away for the meals in which they lead. Coordinate the efforts of the other staff in the distribution and the staging of meals to-go for serving on site. Coordinate and assist other staff in distributing and serving to-go meals. The Kitchen Lead will fill in for other staff who are out sick or who take vacation time and thus their schedule will fluctuate based on the weekly needs of the Kitchen. Due to the COVID pandemic, many of the over 680 Kitchen volunteers are staying at home. For that reason, the Kitchen Lead will need to lead meal production at variable times as volunteer groups cancel their usual meal leadership. The Kitchen Lead will cover any of these gaps in meal leadership as directed by the Program Supervisor to ensure that there is no disruption in service. Ensure that The Community Kitchen is a safe & healthy: Ensure food is stored, and served in accordance with all Dept. of Health regulations and direction provided by the Program Supervisor. Ensure the proper sanitation of all serving areas and equipment in accordance with all Dept. of Health regulations and direction provided by the Program Supervisor. Ensure all kitchen, serving, and other equipment is in good, safe, usable condition and notify the Program Supervisor of any concerns. Drive to-go meals and supplies in CCS's provided vehicle and maintain a sanitary environment for food and equipment transport as needed, and sanitize after use. Ensure the issued kitchen and other equipment is cleaned and sanitized, returned and properly stored for future use prior to end of each shift and clean up garbage inside and outside of the facility following CCS policies including the policy on the safe handling of needs. After meal service, ensure that all volunteers have left the site. Follow the guidelines for cleaning and closing the Kitchen, ensure that all equipment is turned off, lights are out, and doors are locked. Possess a current Washington State Food Handler's Permit at all times while employed. Possess and carry a current WA State driver's license and driver's insurance. Take all actions necessary to ensure that TCK is a welcoming and safe place for volunteers, staff and others. Other duties as may be reasonably assigned including helping on-site at the Community Kitchen as time allows: Sort, pick up and transport supplies from vendors, Thurston County Food Bank, and other places. Deliver meals to various sites. Other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of The Community Kitchen and its service to those in need. Minimum Qualifications At least 1 year of food service experience. Have a general knowledge of food handling and meal preparation including food safety, worker safety, and inventory acquisition and control. Must have good verbal and written skills Valid WA State driver's license and current driving abstract indicating clean driving record. Reliable transportation Food Handlers Card and current TB test Good interpersonal and communication skills Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team . The ability to work with a diverse group of people. Ability to respond quickly to program changes. Ability to lift 50 lbs. Applicant must successfully pass required background checks prior to an offer of employment Preferred Qualifications High School diploma or GED AA Degree in food related field Experience in managing, training and supervising volunteers. Intimate knowledge and experience in working with diverse cultures and racial groups. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
