The Department of Marine Biotechnology's Tracy Lab at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) in downtown Baltimore is hiring a Faculuty Research Assistant ( FRA, or Research Technician), to help manage field and laboratory research related to project on oyster parasites, biodiversity, and aquaculture.
The successful applicant will be well versed in marine invertebrate biology, experienced with aquaculture techniques and priorities, knowledge of shellfish physiology, use of spreadsheets to organize and integrate data, use basic statistics to conduct analysis. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate strong organization, written and oral communication skills and the ability to work well with diverse collaborators and team. This position requires working with other technicians, interns, graduate students and other labs.
Lead logistics for planning and executing field research on oyster aquaculture Troubleshoot and develop field and lab protocols Conduct fieldwork for sampling and experiments Process samples in the laboratory ( dissections, morphometrics, extractions, PCR, histology, microscopy, assays) Contibute data management, analysis, stewardship, scientific manuscripts, data synthesis using publicly available data and spatial mapping software. General lab maintenance Participate and contribute to lab and IMET outreach and engagement activities Travel to Chesapeake Bay for research Use of spatial ecology and mapping software (GIS) Work on small boats for field sampling Bachelor's degree in related field (e.g., ecology, aquatic biology, molecular biology, microbiology, marine science
Preferred: Master's degree or equivalent education. Hands on experience working in field and laboratory research settings.
