Overview: The Executive Communications Group within the Communications Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks an experienced communications professional to support the Chief Inclusion Officer, the Office of Research Education, and the Office of the Laboratory Director with the development of strategies and products that effectively communicate to stakeholders in each of those areas.
Major Duties/Responsibilities: Work with the Chief Inclusion Officer to recommend and implement strategies, best practices, and effective messaging for communicating about ORNL's diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts. Support the Office of Research Education with communications strategies and deliverables that support student experience, staff recognition, and engagement with colleges and universities. Coach the Chief Inclusion Officer and Office of Research Education Director on effective communications; manage strategies, in conjunction with ORNL Communications, to enhance internal and external awareness of initiatives in both areas, including coordination with lab-wide priorities. Assess communications needs of the Chief Inclusion Officer and Office of Research Education and make recommendations on staffing needs. Collaborate with other members of the Executive Communications Group to support communications needs of the Office of the Laboratory Director. This includes the development of presentations, speeches, written testimonies, and other products that align with the priorities of the Laboratory Director, the Deputy for Science and Technology, and the Deputy for Operations. Work closely with the Executive Communications Group Manager and Communications Division Director to strategically grow the executive communications function at ORNL. Interact with colleagues across ORNL Communications to ensure clear, concise, and consistent messaging across products and channels. Strengthen internal and external branding through consistent messaging across platforms and by applying ORNL styles/standards to internal and external communications products. Abide by the principles of Safe Conduct of Research, including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, exhibiting a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never ceasing to learn. Basic Qualifications: Minimum of a bachelor's degree and 8 years of progressive experience in communications-related positions. Excellent written and oral communications skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills are required. Must possess the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and lead a team in a deadline-driven environment. Must have the ability to work both independently and with all levels of staff in a team-based environment. Must possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop and implement solutions. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated success in communicating sophisticated and complicated national or international science projects. Experience working in a research or scientific project environment; and ability to translate complex technical concepts into language easily comprehensible to non-specialists. Previous experience with DOE and the national laboratory system is preferred. Previous experience in science writing is beneficial. Candidate must be self-motivated and self-directed while integrating direction and preferences from clients into the execution of all tasks. Experience working with senior leaders or executives and the confidence to fulfill urgent requests in a timely and professional manner are essential. Work Directions and Interfaces: This position will report to the Manager of the Executive Communications Group; it will be matrixed to the Chief Inclusion Officer and the Director of the Office of Research Education. The matrixed managers will have direct input regarding incumbent's job performance as well as task assignments and priorities.
