Details of the offer

1. Develops vision and strategy for providing seamless, equitable access to special collections materials in support of research and teaching. Assesses and develops service offerings to improve access to special collections based on evolving user needs and informed by qualitative and quantitative data. Leads the development, adoption, and ongoing revision of policies and practices relating to access services for special collections, focusing on exceptional customer service and user experience. 2. Directs the operational effectiveness of the Beinecke Library and its work to deepen collaboration and harmonize practices within the Beinecke Library and across Yale Library's six special collections repositories. Special areas of focus include a) reading room operations and patron services; b) onsite collections storage, retrieval, circulation, and transport; c) seamless access to collection materials via online systems, d) space planning; e) operational policies and procedures, internal communications and documentation, and records management; f) program planning and assessment; g) and staff development, workplace culture, inclusivity and belonging.    3. Exercises programmatic leadership for the Beinecke Library's public research spaces, onsite stacks, and related areas. Leads the development of a cohesive vision for these spaces, and coordinates with stakeholders for the variety of uses and services in these spaces, such as relating to collections, security, facilities, information technology, events, exhibits, instruction, preservation, and other programs. 4. Leads the Access Services and Operations Department within the Beinecke Library comprising approximately 29 FTE who are responsible for reading room operations and services, circulation and stacks management, reference quality reprographics services, strategic projects, organizational operations, and organizational development.      5. Develops and administers budgets consistent with University policies and procedures.  6. Works effectively across the Yale Library on shared strategies, initiatives, and issues relating to physical and online access to Yale Library's special collections. Partners include the Director of Collections and Chief Curator, the Director of Special Collections Technical Services, the Director of Digital Special Collections and Access, the Director of Community Engagement, the Director of Academic Affairs and Exhibitions, the directors of Yale Library's special collections repositories, the Program Director for Assessment and User Experience Research, and others. 7. Works effectively across the Yale Library on shared initiatives, programs, or issues relating to administration, security, finances, human resources, physical infrastructure, and technical infrastructure. Partners include the Director of Finance and Administration, the AUL for IT and Administrative Services, Senior Director for Library Information Technology, Yale Library Director of Security, Director of Building Operations, Director of Library Collection Services and Operations, Director and Associate Directors of Preservation and Conservation, and the Senior Human Resources Generalist. Projects may include remedial and preventative maintenance and construction, insurance and risk management reporting, security improvements, technological enhancements, and similar initiatives.      8. Builds partnerships and professional relationships across Yale Library and Yale's other cultural and heritage institutions to deliver services that are proactive and responsive to community needs.    9. As appropriate, contributes at the national level, recognizes library trends and opportunities, and uses this knowledge to enrich local programs and strategic planning. May represent the Beinecke Library at local, regional, national and international levels.

Preferred Education: Experience with library assessment practices. Experience managing in a unionized environment. Demonstrated understanding of ethical and legal concerns pertaining to access to cultural heritage materials. Demonstrated knowledge of archival and library management systems, notably Aeon, Alma, and ArchivesSpace.



Work Week: Standard (M-F equal number of hours per day)

Demonstrated knowledge of archival and library management systems, notably Aeon, Alma, and ArchivesSpace. 1. Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school or a post-graduate degree in a related field, and bachelor's degree.  2. Eight years of related experience in an academic or public library, or similar institution.    3. Strong managerial experience with demonstrated success in change management, coaching, and performance management. 4. Experience leading and assessing user-focused operations in a special collections environment.  5. Experience working collegially, collaboratively, and independently with varied groups across a complex organization and rapidly changing environment.  6. Experience with managing relationships and influencing outcomes. About Yale University
