About the Position: The chief objectives of the Coordinator of Competitive Sports and Special Events are to plan, organize, schedule, supervise, implement and evaluate various recreational programs; recruit, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate wage employees; and provide administrative support to the Competitive Sports office. This staff member will ultimately improve the quality of service and efficiency of Mason Recreation. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports, Camps, and Athletic Training.
Responsibilities: Program and Policy Management:
Develop, promote, and implement a comprehensive competitive sports program including a variety of individual intramural sports, club sport organizations, and special events; Implement risk management procedures to include student travel and emergency action plans; Effectively train and empower students to respond appropriately to incidents; Maintain high visibility and accessibility to program participants and staff (which may include evenings and weekends); Coordinate registration procedures, schedule leagues, tournaments, and special events; Work collaboratively with other departmental and division staff to define facility needs and schedule appropriately; Develop, interpret, review, and enforce policies and procedures related to Intramural and Club Sport activities; Communicate with teams and captains regarding policies and rules, and disciplinary procedures and schedules; and Submit programmatic assessments each fall and spring semester. Personnel Management:
Mentor, motivate, and effectively lead programming staff; Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate approximately 50+ student staff in the positions of program assistants, supervisors, and officials; Actively incorporate departmental Mission, Vision, and Values into staff training and development; Assist in the training of Club Sport Executive and Safety Officers; and Assist in the onboarding process for Club Sport Coaches (wage and volunteer); and Provide mentorship to the Executive Council of Clubs (ECCS). Financial Management:
Work with the Assistant Director for Competitive Sports in developing and managing Competitive Sports program budgets to include payroll, spending, fee allocation procedures, and revenue opportunities. Strategic Management & Planning:
Strategically plan programs to incorporate divisional priorities as they relate to the University Life strategic plan and student learning priorities; and Make strategic recommendations for future programs and services. Professional Development and Departmental Support/Other Duties:
Continue to develop professionally through membership and participation in applicable professional organizations and developmental workshops; Provide students and staff with opportunities for professional development through various organizations, workshops, clinics, and extramural activities; Coordinate with various on-campus departments to provide leadership workshops for students and staff; Serve on campus committees pertinent to competitive sports and special events; Commitment to making an active and meaningful contribution to the university's well-being initiative; Support and take an active role in Mason Rec departmental special events; Participate in the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to support departmental improvement; and Perform other duties as requested. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience; Experience in a university/college recreational sports setting (typically obtained in one or more years); Demonstrated knowledge related to recreational programming and related rules and policies; Ability to relate well to diverse individuals; Ability to train, supervise, and motivate a large staff of student leaders for the competitive sports and camp programs; Ability to provide leadership and guidance to a diverse club sports program; Ability to manage budgets; Ability to foster a positive work environment and encourage collaboration and teamwork; Commitment to making an active and meaningful contribution to the university's well-being initiative; and American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment. Preferred Qualifications: Computer software experience in competitive sports scheduling; Experience with Business Microsoft Office; and Sports officiating, training, and experience in one or more sports.
