Delegation of Authority: As an Assistant Teacher, you are delegated the authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties. Assistant Teachers are supervised by the Director/Administrator. In the absence of the Director/Administrator, the Assistant Director(s) are responsible for supervision of program staff. Good Shepherd Services Executive Director is responsible to oversee the overall operation of center programs.
Essential Functions: Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Must be familiar with and follow the policies and procedures set forth in Wisconsin Licensing DCF 251 and that of Good Shepherd Services and Good Shepherd Children's Center. Shall be familiar with child abuse and neglect laws and will report any suspected abuse or neglect to the director and/or social services. Shall assist a teacher in planning and implementing daily, weekly and monthly lesson plans. Shall assist in organizing materials needed for daily activities and cleaning up after the completion of activities. Supervises, knows the names, whereabouts and number of children assigned to your care at all times. Does not allow children out-of licensed program area without appropriate adult supervision as per center policy and DCF 251. Intervenes when children are engaging in behaviors that could harm themselves, others or property using positive guidance techniques. Shall assist children with personal cleanliness, meal service and self-help skills. Ensures that all foods served at meals and snacks are age appropriate, to cut or mash foods to size to prevent choking hazards and monitor the temperature of food to prevent scalding. Shall be alert to children under your care who have allergies to foods or other substances. Shall know the actions to be taken in the event that a possible allergic reaction may occur. Is aware of any children under your care with special health needs and knows interventions or assistance needed to care for those children. Will properly and legibly fill out daily sheets for children in those classrooms where, a daily sheet in regards to the child's day is sent home with the family. Communicates effectively and professionally with parents/guardians, co-workers and community partners. Will transition children from activity to activity so that they do not have to wait in large lines or for extended periods of time. Shall know the policies and procedures to follow in emergency situations and be capable of implementing those procedures. Will report any possible safety hazards to the Director/Administrator including, but not limited to broken or unsafe toys or equipment. Will be familiar with first aid procedures which can be implemented at the center and will be capable of performing those procedures. Shall be aware of the location of first aid and eye wash stations. Shall understand universal precautions and health policies and shall know the location of the MSDS manual and how to use it. Shall assist in cleaning the center including, but not limited to: vacuuming carpets, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning up spills, flooded toilets, cleaning up bodily substances that come in contact with floors, toys or equipment, dusting furniture, wiping up after meals or activities and keeping classrooms and the center clean, safe and dust free. Will administer medications or apply ointments to children upon request of the parent/guardian who have filled out a proper authorization form and document in the Medical/Accident Log as per center policy and DCF 251. Will fill out an Accident/Ouch Report as per policy as necessary and documents in the Medical/Accident Log as per center policy and DCF 251. Understands and utilizes proper diapering procedures and disinfection of changing tables. Staff working in infant and toddler rooms shall be aware of proper use and storage of formulas, breast milk and baby foods. Will be aware of all policies and procedures which are specific to the particular age group to which you are assigned. Will remain flexible to work with any age group where an assistant teacher is needed.
