Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Behavioral Specialist will support the community department program in the areas of behavior assessment, intervention, parent communication and support success of program participants, families and staff. This position will assess program quality and support improvements in processes as needed. The Behavioral Specialist focuses on a person-centered approach to ensure each child is treated individually with the child's success as the goal. Additionally, the Behavior Specialist acts as the liaison with community agencies specializing in behavior management. Support the YMCA youth programs in managing behavioral incidents and concerns. Write, implement and perform ongoing revisions of behavior modification plans and Individual Success Plans (ISP), including long and short term goals. Provide assessments, create plans and train staff to be effective in carrying out the behavior plans in each environment. Develop and train staff to build capacity around behavior management and mental health. Meet with parents and staff to create a collaborative approach to managing behavior for a positive outcome. Partner with department leadership to ensure open, honest and positive communication and a team approach to problem solving. Collect, review and analyze behavior trends. Complete required documentation and assure compliance to meet state and local licensing requirements. Meet with Department of Human Services representatives or school officials as needed. Develop collaborative relationships with community behavioral health/mental health agencies. Visits programs to observe activities to ensure that program standards are met and safety procedures are followed. Discuss observations and recommendations to leadership staff. Provide strategies and interventions to improve site environments. Maintain confidentiality of children's records and the matters relating to the families. Conduct quality checks at sites to ensure program expectations are being met and following up with supervisors to help create corrective actions as needed. Educational Background  Bachelor's degree in family and child development, counseling, social work or other related human service field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree preferred.
Skills/Experience  2 years of experience in a school or clinical setting working with school aged children with diverse abilities. Excellent oral and written communication. Patient and calm demeanor under pressure. Willing to work in various environments consistent with a YMCA. Experience tracking and summarizing data into reports. Strong organizational and communication skills with attention to details, timelines and follow-through. Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful. Prefer two years of experience as an educational trainer and in developing training designs. Able to make independent and sound decisions in a fast paced environment. Able to exercise high levels of discretion and confidentiality.
