Job DescriptionReporting to the TRIO programs director, the associate director is responsible for assisting with the administration, implementation and continuation of the three U.S. Department of Education funded Upward Bound projects. These three unique programs, Roanoke City, Salem, and Southwest VA are dedicated to encouraging and preparing income eligible, potential first-generation college students, and/or students who are considered academically at-risk by federal definitions to pursue a post-secondary education.Position Summary:-Provide managerial and programmatic oversight for the daily operations of the three Upward Bound programs;-Responsible for ensuring the successful recruitment, retention and participation of program participants in the three UB programs for all target schools, and ensuring the programs meet the federally required assurance that two thirds of participants will be both income -eligible and first-generation college students;-Responsible for ensuring services and student progress are adequately and clearly documented in accordance with federal regulations and office policy;-Coordinates the organization and implementation of the Academic and Summer Components;-Responsible for the training, supervision, and evaluation of the Upward Bound programs staff;-Builds effective relationships with target school staff to ensure programmatic continuity;-Participant caseload may vary based on other duties.This position will have periodic travel to target schools to ensure proper program implementation and supervision of staff.Weekend, evening, and travel responsibilities periodically during the academic year, and with increased frequency in during the summer months.Required QualificationsMaster's degree in education, social work or related areaRelevant professional experience working for a federal TRIO program and/or similar related program(s)/project(s) serving students from underserved or at-risk populationsExperience providing services and programming on a group and individual basis designed to help students overcome social, cultural, and academic barriers to postsecondary educationDemonstrated understanding of the college admissions and financial aid processExcellent communication skillsSupervisory and performance management experiencePreferred QualificationsPrevious experience working with the U.S. Department of Education and federal TRIO ProgramsExperience working with students in the foster care system, and with students and families who are homeless, or at-risk of being homeless, according to the McKinney Vento ActPrevious experience working with an Upward Bound project Demonstrated progressively responsible experienceDemonstrated experience in developing and securing local, state and/or federal grants/proposalsAppointment TypeRestrictedSalary InformationCommensurate with experience, up to a budget maximum of $73,000Review Date05/08/2024Additional InformationThe successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.About Virginia TechDedicated to its motto,Ut Prosim(That I May Serve), Virginia Tech pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing scholars to be leaders and problem-solvers.
