Position Summary: The Associate Chair for Administration (ACA) partners with the Chair in the Department of Surgery to develop and execute on a strategic vision and to lead the Department across the clinical care, education, research, and service missions. The ACA ensures departmental resource allocation in support of strategic priorities, with a focus on school and system alignment. The Associate Chair assumes substantial independent senior administrative authority in the Chair's Office with responsibility for the Department's policy development, oversight of human resources and financial management, and implementation of systems and resource management to advance the stated goals.
The Associate Chair serves several primary functions for the department. The Associate Chair is a member of the senior management team of the Department and directs all non-medical activities for the Department. In this role, the Associate Chair is a full-partner with the Chair in internal Departmental activities and as the liaison to the Health Care System and University at large. The Associate Chair also serves as the Departmental representative to a large number of other external groups and individuals, including referring physicians, contract physicians and agencies, peer institutions, third-party payers, managed care companies, and vendors.
The Chair and the Associate Chair work hand-in-hand to set the direction and determine the strategic priorities of the Department to assure that the Department's mission is achieved. The ACA has primary responsibility for: 1. Financial Planning, Development, and Management 2. Clinical and Business Operations Management 3. Human Resources Management 4. Sponsored Programs Management 5. Planning and Marketing 6. Governance and Oversight.
The Department of Surgery has a long history of excellence in clinical care, education, and research across the translational spectrum. It consists of 10 divisions with 294 department members including 78 faculty, 40 APPs, and 87 trainees, and is experiencing a period of tremendous growth. The clinical services provided by the Department of Surgery span the spectrum of surgical disease for both adult and pediatric patients, including acute care/trauma, burn, cardiac, thoracic, general, gastrointestinal, pediatric, plastic, surgical oncology, transplant, and vascular surgery. The Department completes over 13,500 Operations, 58,500 Clinical Visits, 6,000 Inpatient Discharges, and 545,000 Total RVUs. The department admits patients to multiple UNC Health hospitals with a primary focus at the medical center in Chapel and Hillsborough. Operations are performed at each of these sites, as well as the Ambulatory Care Center and Chatham Hospital. Ambulatory clinics are staffed throughout the Chapel Hill area.
With over $6 million in annual research grants, the Department is committed to supporting a robust and broad research program. To achieve this goal, they are building infrastructure to support clinical trials and health services research to complement their well-developed programs in translational science and global health. The Department actively engages in surgical education and training, including medical students, residents, fellows, and continuing education. The Department includes 4 ACGME-approved residency programs in cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, plastic surgery, and vascular surgery. In addition, several fellowships (both ACGME and non-ACGME approved) include critical care, burn, surgical oncology, transplant, and vascular surgery.
The Department recently completed a 5-year strategic planning process and is executing across the 4 pillars: (1) building clinical programs of excellence that are coordinated and multi-disciplinary; (2) being a national leader in surgical performance and educational innovation; (3) leading the state in quality measurement and improvement; and (4) ensuring our people know where they belong and feel valued. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Minimum qualifications of an advanced degree, masters or higher (or foreign degree equivalent), and no less than 5 to 7 years of management-level experience in the full range of administrative and financial functions of an academic department or research center in a higher education, research, or health care setting. Candidates with 7 to 10 years of directly comparable experience may substitute for the required advanced degree in which case a bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and the requisite experience is mandatory.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: The Associate Chair must possess superior verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal behaviors, and the capacity to inspire confidence in his or her reasoning and decision-making.
The successful Associate Chair will be an experienced, intuitive, creative, and dynamic leader with superior interpersonal and problem-solving skills. The Associate Chair will have well-developed attributes of professionalism, leadership, communication, presentation abilities, superior organizational skills, as well as analytic expertise. Critical skills and knowledge required are focused but not limited to the following areas: program development and growth, strategic planning, customer service, patient/physician/staff satisfaction, quality improvement, marketing, public relations, physician recruitment, public speaking, financial management, operational leadership, and human resource management. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Candidates should have five to ten years experience as a senior manager in a medical practice or other health care organization, ideally in an academic medical center.
