Accountant (CPA)
General Summary:
The Accountant role is pivotal in maintaining the integrity of financial records and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. This position involves managing financial transactions, conducting analyses, and overseeing routine accounting tasks. Additionally, the Accountant may provide guidance to junior staff and support accounts receivable activities.
Education Required:
Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university with a major in Accounting or a related field, including a minimum of 24 semester hours of accounting coursework. Certification(s) Required:
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or actively pursuing CPA certification. Preferred Years of Experience:
Five (5) or more years of related experience. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Proficiency in accounting principles, practices, and procedures, including journal entry preparation.
Familiarity with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.
Competence in MS Office applications, particularly Excel.
Experience with internal and external audits to ensure regulatory compliance.
Aptitude for problem-solving and analytical thinking.
Essential Functions and Duties:
Assist in preparing monthly financial statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
Reconcile BREC cash accounts and manage collection of receivables.
Post accounting journals, correct coding errors, and reconcile balance sheet accounts.
Collaborate with auditors during external and internal audits.
Identify control gaps, irregularities, and errors, and recommend corrective actions.
Attend meetings to address accounting-related matters and provide input.
Review routine accounting documents for accuracy and completeness.
May assist in budget preparation.
Secondary Job Duties:
Cross-train and serve as a substitute for Senior Accountant as needed.
Supervise and coordinate the work of other account clerks.
Prepare special reports for Auditors and Finance Director.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Necessary Equipment, Instruments, Materials:
Basic office equipment such as a personal computer, 10-key calculator, fax, phone, printer, scanner, and financial software.
Access to a vehicle for offsite audits and training visits to BREC facilities.
Environment:
Typical office environment with no extreme temperatures or excessive noise. Mental Involvement:
Ability to prepare accurate statements within set deadlines. Language Skills:
Proficiency in written and verbal English communication. Physical Demands:
Primarily sedentary position with occasional walking and standing.
Climbing stairs required for accessing upper levels of buildings.
Manual dexterity needed for writing, typing, and operating office equipment.
Near visual acuity for reading, writing, and inspecting data.
Working Hours: Full-time position, minimum 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, with occasional overtime.
