Full job description SUMMARY: The Upward Bound Academic and Program Specialist provides administrative support for in-house and electronic data management and daily office operations. Implements and facilitates workshops for participants and parents relevant to educational opportunities. Provides academic coaching and career exploration. Assists in supervising Saturday Academy, excursions, special Meetings, college visits, and ACT/SAT workshops, and assists with summer academy planning and execution to prepare high school students for college admission.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides classroom support Assists Upward Bound Staff with organizational and clerical work Plans the implementation of TRIO Upward Bound events, tutoring schedules at target high schools, and enrichment activities. Leads/chaperones small student groups during college visits and cultural enrichment trips. Assists with Upward Bound special events Serves as a liaison to target school principals, counselors, and teachers Assists student participants in improving course grades and curriculum content. Works with Upward Bound participants to improve overall academic achievement. Manages the day-to-day program operations, including recordkeeping/office support Assists the Director with the selection of students, reports, and evaluation Guides students with residency concerns, registration, and financial concerns as well as FAFSA/scholarship applications Provides feedback to the Upward Bound Director regarding each participant's unique and individual needs and attends staff development/in-service training. Supports Upward Bound participants outside of the classroom by attending Upward Bound special programs. Provides regular and timely submission of student attendance, grades, and reports. Conducts and facilitates small group sessions Provide program services to UB participants in target high schools, including advising, enrichment activities, tutoring, group presentations, and workshops. Design strategies to identify and advise under-served student populations while monitoring academic progress. Must be able to attend workshops and conferences for professional growth as required. Performs other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree. Two (2) years of experience working with students. Experience working with low-income and first-generation students. Experience working with students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds. Ability and understanding to work cooperatively with various students and staff. Ability to maintain professional and ethical conduct at all levels of interaction with program participants. Knowledge of barriers to secondary and post-secondary education faced by low-income and first-generation students. Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers like those confronting participants PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS: Degree in Social work, Sociology, Psychology, or Education Experience working with high school students ENVIRONMENT AND DEMANDS: The work environment is an office setting with moderate noise. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
