The OA provides assistance to Ophthalmologists/Optometrists by performing clerical and clinical duties required to most effectively handle the day-to-day functioning of their practices. This job performs Ophthalmic Assistant (OA) duties, as well as end-point refractions and higher-level ophthalmic testing.
Principal Accountabilities:
Completes patient work-up through greeting the patient and obtaining critical information such as chief complaint, medications, allergies, testing of vision, neutralizing of spectacles, history, and chart information. Enters information into Cerner in accordance with VM standard process. Takes intraocular pressure by applanation or Tonopen, and performs refractometry. Consistently performs complete examinations at the rate of three per hour. May perform a number of additional tests including, but not limited to, A- or B-scan calculations, Visual Fields, Pachymetry, Corneal Topography, Heidelberg Retina Tomography (HRT) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). May assist physician with in-office procedures, as appropriate and in accordance with incumbent's training. Administers ocular medications as prescribed by the physician. Provides both verbal and written patient education so that the patient leaves with a solid understanding of their problem/condition. Performs telephone triage and appointment scheduling. 90% Assists the physician in the laser suite, exam room, and other areas to enhance physician effectiveness. 5% Restocks and cleans exam rooms after patient care. Conducts area sweeps during and at end of day to ensure that team area is always at a level 4 per 5S guidelines. Closes rooms at end of patient schedule. 5% "We deliver inspired people to do meaningful work." 6 months working in an optometry or ophthalmology practice preferred.

Specific skills in support of clinic operations will either be demonstrated by the candidate or will be taught if the candidate is untrained. These include: understanding ophthalmic testing and the use of ophthalmic instruments and equipment; a cursory knowledge of anatomy, pharmacology, medical terminology, sterilization techniques, and basic eye care.

This is a temporary position in order to hire individuals from the outside who have skills or experience but no certification. A newly hired employee must obtain JCAHPO COA within 18 months of employment, then transfer to the COA job title.
Basic skills in operating a computer and office equipment are critical. Strong interpersonal and customer relations skills; strong communication skills and organizational skills required. Ability to make chart documentation with entry into electronic medical record.
