Founded in 2004 and named for the first African-American woman to earn her Ph.D. in Mathematics, the award-winning E.L. Haynes Public Charter School serves more than 1,135 students in grades Pre-K3 through 12th grade. E.L. Haynes operates two campuses in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC, and offers a rigorous educational program designed to prepare students to succeed in the college of their choice.

The College Counselor supports students in developing their identity as future college students. The Counselor will work directly with E.L. Haynes high school students to build and strengthen their college-going identity and support them in finding meaningful out-of-school experiences that assist in discovering their interests and passions. With the Counselor's support, students will be encouraged to explore how these experiences are connected to future educational and career goals.
This 12-month role reports to the Director of College Counseling and works closely with other members of the College Office team as well as advisors through the high school advisory system. Starting Salary: $70,384 - $93,155 You will: Build meaningful and authentic relationships , with a focus on 9th graders, that support students and families to identify their future goals and desires and design a pathway to achieve them; Identify, cultivate and sustain partnerships that offer students a diverse range of meaningful out-of-school experiences that align with the curricular goals of the high school; Recruit and support students, especially 9th and 10th graders, in identifying and applying for out-of-school experiences that align with their future goals; Collaborate with the College Office Team to design and deliver student and family workshops that help demystify the college-going process; Help deliver an advisory curriculum that supports students in understanding the college process and developing life skills to be able to engage with a high level of independence in the college application process; Ensure out-of-school experiences and connections align with college access metrics by tracking, analyzing, and presenting data that helps the College Office and other school-level stakeholders understand patterns of participation; Maintain and strengthen the college-going culture at E.L. Haynes' High School by collaborating with other members of the College Office Team, including coordinating surveys and other methods of collecting data and assessing student and family thoughts and desires regarding college attendance; and Be an active member of the school community, attending and participating in school events outside of regular school hours, and completing other duties as assigned. You Have: A minimum of 3 years of experience working with high school students from racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds; A background in school counseling, social work, and/or college access; Experience designing and implementing lessons and informational workshops for students and/or families; A desire to build on an existing program; An appreciation for the developmental needs of high school students; A commitment to supporting students in pursuing a college education; and Full COVID-19 vaccination . You Might Also Have: Oral and written proficiency in Spanish and English; Experience coordinating out-of-school programming for secondary school students including building formal partnerships with youth-serving organizations; Experience teaching at the secondary level; Served as a classroom/homeroom advisor or counselor for a group of secondary students; and Developed and executed systems and plans for regular communication with parents of secondary students.
